What is Simplicity?: Exploring the Meaning and Significance

What is simplicity? Simplicity is a concept that has captivated philosophers, artists, and individuals throughout history. It is a virtue that transcends cultural boundaries and speaks to the very essence of who we are. In a world that is constantly bombarding us with distractions and complexities, embracing simplicity has become more important than ever. But what does simplicity truly mean, and why is it so significant in various aspects of life?

Within ourselves, we can feel what simplicity is, but putting words to it seems to add a layer of complexity. To me, simplicity is something that is plain, clear, and natural…it reflects our core values at an individual level. That also means that simplicity is personal and unique to each person. When you can define simplicity for yourself, you are in a position to craft a life on the outside that’s consistent with who you are on the inside. The complicated nature of our society can mask the straightforwardness of simplicity, but the essential elements are clear once you start to look within.

The meaning of simplicity

At its core, simplicity is the art of distilling complex ideas, emotions, and experiences into their most essential and meaningful forms. It's about stripping away the unnecessary layers and focusing on what truly matters. Simplicity is not about dumbing down or just making things easier; rather, it's about finding the perfect balance between complexity and clarity.

In a practical sense, simplicity can be seen as the absence of unnecessary complexity. It's finding plainspoken elegance in simplicity – a simplicity that is not necessarily ease, but rather sophisticated and refined. It's the ability to communicate ideas concisely, to design with clean lines and minimalistic aesthetics, and to live a life that is uncluttered, clear, and purposeful.

Not to oversell it, but simplicity is a profound personal state that involves deep clarity around who you are and what you want, then executing a deliberate plan to focus your thoughts and actions on those things. It’s amplifying what truly matters to you and letting the rest of the noise fall away.

The significance of simplicity in different aspects of life

Simplicity holds great significance in (dare I say) all aspects of life – from personal relationships to professional endeavors. In our personal lives, simplicity allows us to connect on a deeper level with both ourselves and others. By removing the noise and distractions, we can truly listen and understand who we are and what we want from life, while removing the pretense of what we may believe society wants from us. Simplicity in relationships fosters trust, empathy, and genuine connections.

In our professional lives, simplicity is the key to effective communication and problem-solving. Complex ideas and strategies can often be confusing and overwhelming. By simplifying our language and breaking down complex concepts into digestible pieces, we can bridge gaps and inspire collaboration. Moreover, simplicity in decision-making helps us prioritize and focus on what truly matters, leading to more efficient and successful outcomes.

The benefits of embracing simplicity

Embracing simplicity brings some serious benefits to your life. Firstly, it frees up mental and physical space. By decluttering our lives – be it our physical spaces, our schedules, or our digital environments – we create room for creativity, clarity, and peace of mind. Simplicity allows us to focus on the things that truly matter, and in doing so, we find greater fulfillment and satisfaction.

Secondly, simplicity reduces stress and overwhelm. In a world that bombards us with information and choices, simplicity provides a respite. It helps us cut through the noise and find a sense of calm in our daily lives. By simplifying our routines, our commitments, and our expectations, we can cultivate a sense of balance and well-being.

Lastly, embracing simplicity encourages sustainable living. By consuming less and living more intentionally, we reduce our impact on the environment. Simplicity promotes a mindful approach to our choices, encouraging us to prioritize quality over quantity and to live in harmony with the world around us. For any of us that are tired of playing the roles we think we "should" play, nailing down a clear definition of simplicity for our unique life opens us to a brighter and more sustainable future as we take control of our lives.

Historical and cultural perspectives on simplicity

Simplicity is not a recent phenomenon; it has been valued throughout history and across cultures. Ancient philosophies such as Taoism and Stoicism emphasized the importance of simplicity as a pathway to wisdom and inner peace. In Taoism, the concept of "wu wei" suggests that by aligning ourselves with the natural flow of life, we can find simplicity and harmony. Similarly, Stoic philosophers believed that simplicity was the key to tranquility and self-mastery.

In different cultures, simplicity has been celebrated through various art forms. Japanese aesthetics, for example, embody the principles of simplicity, minimalism, and tranquility. The concept of "wabi-sabi" embraces imperfection and finds beauty in the simplicity of natural materials. Nordic design, known for its clean lines and functionalism, also emphasizes simplicity as a core principle. Across the globe, simplicity has been revered as a source of beauty, meaning, and profound wisdom.

Our modern society tends to glorify busyness and excess, but simplicity offers a path of deeper meaning, coordination with who you want to be, and the framework for building a truly fulfilling life.

Simplifying your daily life: basic practical tips and strategies

Simplifying your daily life is not always easy to do, but it's well worth the effort. Here are some initial practical tips and strategies to help you embrace simplicity:

  1. Declutter your physical space: Start by removing unnecessary items from your surroundings. Create a space that is clean, organized, and free from distractions. Donate or sell items that no longer serve a purpose in your life.

  2. Streamline your digital life: Limit your time spent on social media and digital platforms. Unsubscribe from unnecessary email lists, delete unused apps, and organize your digital files. Create a digital environment that promotes focus and productivity.

  3. Simplify your schedule: Identify the activities and commitments that bring you joy and fulfillment. Let go of those that drain your energy or add unnecessary stress. Prioritize self-care and create space for rest and rejuvenation.

  4. Practice mindfulness: Cultivate a sense of presence and awareness in your daily life. Pay attention to the small moments, savoring the simple pleasures. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help you reconnect with yourself and the world around you.

By incorporating strategies like these into your life, you can embark on a journey towards simplicity, clarity, and a more fulfilling existence. As we move through life, the things that speak to our sense of simplicity evolve. What’s the simplest way to keep up our home, make sure our kids thrive in school, support our partner, stay physically healthy, or deal with cultural divides that permeate our society? The answers aren’t always easy, but I’ve found there is a voice of simplicity in each of us that can help guide us.

Simplicity in design and aesthetics

Design and aesthetics play a crucial role in our perception of simplicity. From architecture to product design, simplicity has long been revered as a hallmark of good design. Clean lines, minimalistic forms, and a focus on functionality are all elements that embody simplicity in design.

Simplicity in design is not just about aesthetics, though; it's about creating experiences that are intuitive, user-friendly, clear, and meaningful. When design is simple and uncluttered, it allows users to engage with products and spaces effortlessly. Simplicity in design enhances ease of use, promotes accessibility, and creates a sense of harmony between the user and the designed object.

In aesthetics, simplicity is often associated with beauty. The concept of "less is more" suggests that by eliminating the unnecessary, we can create a visual experience that is powerful and impactful. Whether it is in visual arts, fashion, or interior design, simplicity has the ability to evoke emotions, create a sense of tranquility, and leave a lasting impression.

Simplicity in communication and language

Language is a powerful tool for expressing ideas, emotions, and experiences. Simplicity's role in communication involves conveying messages in a clear, concise, and accessible manner. It's about plain language, removing jargon, unnecessary complexity, and ambiguity from our language.

By embracing clear communication, we can bridge gaps, foster understanding, and build stronger connections. It allows us to communicate more effectively across cultural and linguistic barriers, ensuring that our message is received and understood by a diverse audience. Simplicity in communication promotes effective collaboration, empathy, and inclusivity.

Moreover, simplicity in language extends beyond verbal communication. Visual communication, such as infographics and data visualization, relies on simplicity to convey complex information in a clear, digestible format. Simplicity in written communication, such as in storytelling and journalism, helps engage readers and evoke emotions. By simplifying our language, we can create a more inclusive and impactful communication experience.

The role of simplicity in achieving mental clarity and mindfulness

In a world that bombards us with information and distractions, achieving mental clarity and mindfulness can seem like an elusive goal. Simplicity plays a vital role in quieting the noise and cultivating a sense of calm within ourselves.

By simplifying our thoughts, we can gain clarity and focus, particularly around things that are most important to us. This can be achieved through practices such as meditation, journaling, or simply taking a moment of solitude. Simplicity in thought allows us to cut through the mental clutter and tap into our inner wisdom.

Simplicity also fosters mindfulness – the practice of being fully present and aware of our thoughts, feelings, and sensations. By simplifying our daily routines and activities, we create space for mindfulness to flourish. When we engage in activities with intention and presence, we can savor the simple pleasures and find joy in the present moment.

The key is uncovering what feels like simplicity for you, not what others tell you it should be. That can look like a lot of introspection, deep conversations with someone to explore, or casting a wider net through books and websites to reveal what speaks to you. Or maybe it’s a combination of all of those.

Even when you identify what those things are for you, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to spend every day without any stressors, so building the habits and framework to focus your life on what’s most important and natural to you is critically important toward finding your joy and contentment in life. When you live your life in alignment with what’s most important to you, the ability to make clear and simple choices will skyrocket.

Internal and External Effort

At its core, simplicity is an internal journey. Sure, there are plenty of actions you take from your decision to simplify, but everything begins with a conscious choice to declutter (mentally and physically), strip away things that distract from your journey, and align yourself with what’s essential to you. Simplicity – living on purpose – requires self-reflection, an understanding of your core values, and the courage to let go of the other stuff…even when society’s prevailing opinion may say something different. It’s a choice you make for yourself and those you care about. Simplicity is not about fundamentally have less in your life or any type of deprivation; it’s about being clear on what you want for your life, getting more of what matters to you, and emphasizing quality over quantity.

As I thought through some simplicity examples of what this looks like in people’s lives, I wanted to share two client summaries that may help frame simplicity in your own life:

  • Jane is a successful entrepreneur, who started, owns, and manages 4 restaurants. The reality of her career is that it’s demanding. She works a lot of hours and regularly makes difficult decisions that impact both her business and her employees. It’s not light stuff. Through simplicity coaching, Jane has also done the work to understand her unique core values and how to align what she does every day with who she is. With the core value work as a foundation, she practices mindful living by incorporating stillness, reflection, journaling, and adding appropriate white space into her day. These exercises allow her to continue to push forward professionally in the context of her core values. Jane understands that simplicity doesn’t mean sacrificing ambition or career development, but rather it’s about channeling her energy into what truly matters to her. While she still works plenty of hours each week, she fosters a sense of balance and harmony by practicing mindfulness and consistently reminding herself of her core values.

  • Steven is a freelance graphic artist, who loves bringing the visual side of a company’s business to life. He works from his home office, and he realized about 2 years ago that his physical space was starting to distract from his work. He had let clutter creep into his life over time, and his home had become a bit of a war zone of stuff. So, he started the process of decluttering - along with other work - through simplicity coaching. He began to consciously curate his work and living spaces, focusing on the fewer high-quality (to him) objects that enhanced his creativity and joy. It took work for him to declutter, and it’s an ongoing process to make sure clutter doesn’t creep back in. The results, though, include a more focused professional life and being delighted with what he sees whenever he looks around his home. The decision to simplify the stuff in his life helped Steven to reclaim the focus he wanted on his creative projects.

While simplicity certainly starts from within, external factors do play in an important role in how simplicity will play out in your life. More specifically, it’s about the steps you take and relationships you develop to nurture more simplicity in your life. Three primary external factors to consider are:

  • Putting a plan for change into action: When you’ve done the internal work to begin focusing on simplicity and the value it can bring to your life, you need to take action. Want to declutter? Focus on spending time with your family? Prioritizing physical wellness? Simplifying how you handle your finances? Need to exit relationships with people who are holding you back? You need a plan of action.

  • Accountability: An accountability partner (as the name implies) holds you accountable for the plans and goals you have for yourself. This can be a friend, spouse, coworker, or professional coach, but find someone with whom you can share your goals, weaknesses, and victories. Someone to walk alongside you in your plan to coordinate the things you do with who you are.

  • Relationships: Over time, we collect a variety of relationships – family, lifelong friends, partners, neighbors, coworkers, fellow parents whose kid plays on the same softball team. As you simplify your life, I would encourage you to take a look at which relationships support your growth and which ones may hold you back. If possible, retaining only the relationships that are additive will help you on your journey. I recognize this is not necessarily an easy process – particularly when you think about your close friends and relatives – but you owe it to yourself to build a supportive network.

Building simplicity in your life requires internal reflection and accompanying external support. You have to take it from a theoretical “that would be nice” concept into an actionable form with real results. When you begin to realize the satisfaction that comes from focusing on what matters most to you, simplicity becomes an awesome source of inspiration both for you and for others. When you give yourself permission to live with simplicity, your wins then encourage other people to live out what truly matters to them. The result is an amazing tapestry of unique individuals that make life so much richer for all of us. We don’t need to follow the crowd. Simplicity provides a unique path to more.

Embracing simplicity for a more fulfilling life

In a world that often glorifies complexity and busyness, embracing simplicity is a powerful act of rebellion in a way. It's a conscious choice to prioritize what truly matters and to find clear meaning in the uncomplicated. Simplicity allows us to connect with others on a deeper level, to communicate and create with clarity, and to find peace and fulfillment in our daily lives.

By embracing simplicity, we can declutter our physical and mental spaces, reduce stress, and live more intentionally. We can create experiences that are intuitive, user-friendly, and meaningful. Simplicity enables us to communicate effectively, foster understanding, and build stronger connections. It allows us to achieve mental clarity and cultivate mindfulness.

Simplicity is a continuous journey that provides strength for each of us in a complex world. We can find greater satisfaction and fulfillment by focusing on our own unique core values. I encourage you to do the work to discover what simplicity means to you, put a clear plan into action to build greater satisfaction in your life, and surround yourself with people who will push you forward. While I don’t know what simplicity looks like for you, I would absolutely love to help you find it. The key question is, "What does simplicity mean to you?" Simplicity coaching can help you discover what simplicity means to you and unlock the transformative power of living a simple, yet extraordinary life.
